Tree planting Oct. 7 at Riverside Park
Former St. Joseph Hospital property will be converted to green space WARREN — Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership and Plant Ahead Ohio are hosting a community tree planting Oct. 7 at the new Riverside Park, located at the former St. Joseph Hospital site, 1307 Tod Ave. NW.
TNP received a $20,000 grant through AARP’s Community Challenge to turn the 52-acre space into a usable greenspace, following the demolition of the former hospital. The grant was awarded in May and TNP has six months to use it.
The organization was one of seven groups statewide to receive funds from AARP.
The goal of the project is to engage residents by creating a recreational space within walking distance of the neighborhood with an emphasis on older adult usability. The project includes a walking path installation, benches, picnic tables, pollinator garden and trees. TNP seeks donations to add more trees to the site.
“We are grateful to AARP for the opportunity to reclaim this site as greenspace, and we are turning to the community to enhance the current site plan by adding more trees,” project coordinator Lydia Lynch states in a news release.
The Trumbull County Land Bank owns the property, but eventually ownership will be transferred to the city for maintenance as a park.
TNP, in conjunction with the Trumbull County Land Bank and the city of Warren, received funding through the Ohio Department of Development in 2022 to demolish the hospital that closed in 1996. Demolition and environmental cleanup began in December.
Mayor Doug Franklin said previously the city is looking at the nearby properties to update the entire campus off Tod Avenue, including Someplace Safe and the Warren VA Clinic.
Residents and groups have the opportunity to adopt a bench or tree that will be placed in Riverside Park. The tree donation is $75, and the donor has the opportunity to plant their tree at the community tree planting event. Larger sponsor opportunities are also welcomed.
The tree planting event will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 7. Parking will be available across the street at Warren Primary Care, and supplies will be provided.
