Our History
In July of 2019 Dr. Lauren Schroeder (retired Director of the Department of Environmental Science at Youngstown State University) wrote a letter to the editor of the Youngstown Vindicator warning of the dangers of Climate Change. Frank Bishop, who was inspired by the letter, took it upon himself to launch a new organization to plant trees to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation (YNDC), Mahoning County Land Bank , City of Youngstown, Trumbull County Land Bank, Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership, Youngstown CityScape, Healthy Community Partnership, and Lola Lewis of Plant Ahead Ohio, and other partners announced the award of a $5,000,000 USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Inflation Reduction Act Grant to YNDC on Thursday, October 12 at 10am.
The announcement was made at a vacant lot and tree planting site on 1303 Glenwood Avenue. YNDC and project partners were in attendance to announce the grant award and project details. A tree was planted as part of the ceremony.
Beginning on April 17, 2024 YNDC's TreeCorps program will plant trees throughout Youngstown.
